No, I’m not talking about the new “50 Shades” movie.  I’m talking about meat on a stick, my friends.  And as if the idea of that type of tasty goodness isn’t enough, we’re wrapping it in bacon.  That’s right, bacon AND meat on a stick.  It just may be the perfect meal.

A little background: We were very fortunate to live in Germany for a few years.  We were also very fortunate to become good friends with the owners of the local Gasthaus called The Kipperhof At the time, it was run by a couple who operated the kitchen as a “Czech Kitchen”. That meant that while there were obvious German specialties on the menu, there was always a Czech twist.  The food was to die for, the people were warm and friendly, and many nights it was tempting to just put a cot behind the bar and sleep there.

While it is now run by different people, there are a few recipes that I was able to take with me when we headed back stateside.  This was one of them.  Called Putenspiess (German for Turkey “Sticks”), it became my “go-to” selection almost every time we were there (which was a LOT). And of course, it has bacon, so that elevates it in my book!

Bacon Wrapped Turkey Skewers

For the few years we were there, I kept asking the the chef what the seasoning was on the turkey kebaps.  She kept saying “barbecue seasoning“.  I thought she was trying to throw me off, keeping her spice blend a secret.  Lo and behold, when I finally got her to show me the actual seasoning, I was like “headslap”!  It really was just McCormick Barbeque Seasoning!

And so I bring to you this week, the week of Chocolate and Bacon (#ChocoBaconLove), bacon as the star of these easy and delicious kebaps.  Imagine if you left out the turkey and ONLY did the bacon-wrapped peppers!  Mmmmm… Schmeckt gut!

These easy and super tasty kebaps are a staple in our house in the Summer when grilling is a daily affair. But given that here in Texas, every day can be grilling weather, we have them even more frequently now. The bacon gives the turkey a delicious, smoky flavor, and the crunch of the sweet red peppers is a perfect counterpoint to the juicy turkey. Served with a creamy garlic sauce, it's easy to just keep popping these lovelies in your mouth. Schmeckt gut, indeed!

  2. Clean each red bell pepper, removing seeds and white pith from inside. Chop into 2" pieces.
    Red Bell Peppers
  3. Wrap half piece of bacon around each slice of bell pepper.
    Bacon & peppers
  4. Spray 4 metal BBQ skewers with cooking spray. Thread one piece of turkey, then one piece of bacon-wrapped pepper, onto each skewer, alternating until skewer is filled. Be sure not to pack each piece too tightly next to each other to allow for air flow around the meat when grilled.

  6. Grill skewers over medium high heat for 15 minutes, or until turkey is cooked through. Use melted butter to baste the skewers as they cook.

Recipe Notes

1. If you can't find creme fraiche, sour cream makes a good substitute.

2. I prefer red bell peppers, but the yellow and orange work just as well.  If you decide to use green peppers, just remember that the whole flavor of the dish will change, as green peppers tend to take over other flavors if used in these proportions.

3. If you can't find McCormick brand seasoning, any BBQ seasoning will work.

4. You can skip the basting with butter, but it makes for a great flavor addition to the salty bacon and sweet peppers.

5. The bacon-wrapped peppers would also make a great appetizer all on their own.  Bacon wrapped ANYTHING is always a crowd-pleaser.
