When people ask me what my favorite type of food is, I answer “yes”. Yeah, I can’t choose. I love it all (believe me–my jeans agree with that statement). But when I’m craving a combination of comfort food AND something that won’t make me feel like I’ve eaten a brick, I generally turn toward Mediterranean dishes. They’re simple, flavorful, and chock full of healthy olive oil, lemons and other great flavors.
Most people go immediately to gyros and souvlaki when they think of Greek food. There is so much more to it than those basics, but I admit that sometimes the basics are go-tos for a reason. Aside from the fact Souvlaki are scrumptious, they are hand-held (portable!), and can offer variety galore depending on what you put into that tasty toasted pita bread.
While I admit that I will eat pretty much anything on warm, toasty pita bread, Souvlaki is easily my favorite thing to put in that yummy wrap.
And now, I have figured out how to get this Greek street food classic on the table without having to go searching for a Souvlaki stand when I have a craving . How have I done that, you wonder? With my trusty All Clad crock pot, of course!
Pork roast, red wine, garlic, olive oil, herbs–and the crock pot. A match made in heaven, and a Greek street food treat in your kitchen! Top with a simple and flavorful homemade tzatziki sauce, and you’ll start yelling Opa! in your own kitchen!

I was fortunate to get this recipe from a friend while we were living overseas. The ingredients are basically a marinade, which you can use with pork or chicken just as easily. However you use this mix, you will fall in love with the rich and bright flavors.
|
- 3 lbs. boneless pork roast, cut into 4 slices
- 1 cup dry red wine
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp. dried oregano
- 1 tsp. dried mint
- 1 tsp. kosher salt
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- pepper, to taste
- 4 pita bread, toasted
- 1 cup arugula, washed
- 2 tbsp. tzatziki (see note below)
- Pat dry and slice pork roast into 4 equal pieces, about 2 inches thick each.
- Place all of the ingredients in the crock pot, and cook on low for 6 hours.
- Remove pork from crock pot and shred into bite sized pieces. Serve on toasted pita bread with arugula and tzatziki.
- Enjoy this Greek street food in your own home!
I mentioned briefly that I got this recipe from some dear friends. When we were living overseas, we were lucky enough to be regular dinner companions to a couple who loved to cook, and DANG did they do it well. This recipe is actually a marinade used with either pork or chicken, and when done with the marinade option instead of the crock pot, you cut the meat into cubes prior to marinading for at least 8 hours, up to overnight. Thread the cubes onto skewers and grill them, then serve with the pita bread and other goodies. So. Darned. Good.
As for the tzatziki, this is a Greek dip/spread that is a regular on many restaurant menus. There are many variations, but in my book it is a MUST for souvlaki, gyros, or even just with warm pita bread.
Want the recipe for my super easy version? Stay tuned! Tomorrow's recipe will show you how to whip up tzatziki for spreading, dipping, or just about any other use!

Yum! I’ve never made souvlaki, but it looks fantastic and easy to do at home!
I would have never thought of doing this in a crockpot but I’m a little obsessed with this idea and can’t wait to try it! Now I don’t have to wait until our next local greek festival to have one of these!
Emily, it is so good I can’t believe I haven’t been making it this way already! So tender and juicy, you will wish you had made a double batch. :o)
